Indonesian Adventure 2024. Bali, Seminyak Beach Stay 17th June to 22nd June 2024

Today we were travelling from Malang to Bali, we were going from Surabaya airport (SUB) to Bali (DPS) with Citylink ( Garuda budget airline).
We got a Grab for the journey to the airport, it was a very easy journey on new toll roads through gorgeous scenery, today was our first day of bright sun and no low clouds. For the toll roads you have to give the Grab drivers the cash.
Surabaya airport looked like it has been upgraded, with a new building adjoining the old one. All very nice, clean and bright. the check in took minutes, no ques at all and once inside the terminal there were a few kiosks to get coffee / tea and food.
The flight was late arriving, but boarding was fast, full aircraft again. The seats were comfortable with good leg room and the flight very short, just one hour.
Bali
Researching Bali had given me a headache! I read so many negative comments that I really did not want to go and almost dismissed it.
We arrived at the domestic terminal, bags were delivered promptly and we made our way to the taxi stands. The Grab stand is at the end of a long line of taxi providers. Because we arrived via domestic there did not seem to be any place to pay the tourist tax?
On arrival at the hotel - a tranquil oasis in a sea of madness! I realised I had made a good decision with my hotel choice, it was wonderful. Once checked in and shown to our room, we were invited to release some turtles on the beach, a magical experience. I just hope some survive to return to the beach as adults.
As it had been a long day traveling we ate at the hotel restaurant, the meal and service was outstanding, but so was the bill. Luckily, it was a very short walk from the hotel to Jl. Kayu Aya - or 'Eat Street', a road lined with restaurants and bars.

Ate at 'the Italian Job', a nice meal then walked along to The Champagne Bar, for drinks and live music from a really good band. - proper tourists today!

Looking at the manic traffic situation, we realised that any 'Day trips' planned may not be feasible. Today we took our lives into our hand and hired a scooter.
Using Google maps we headed inland to Ulun Danu Baratan temple located on a lake. It was a great ride through beautiful scenery, once we got passed the town of Mengwi the traffic became more normal and moved along at a decent pace.
Later, to recover from the scooter ride we had sundowners on the beach.

On foot today, we walked along the beach towards Legain and Kuta, trying to work out what's what - still didn't find out, but had a good walk.
I had booked tickets for the Kecak Dance ( Fire dance) at Uluwatu Temple, as I wanted to see the temple we set off early at 13.30. It took just over three hours to get to the temple, a distance of 28 Kilometres. this was due to the traffic, we could have walked faster, it was horrific. We just made it for the performance, did not have time to look at the temple. Sat and uncomfortable benches, squashed in with hundreds of others and the show was awful ! The photos make it look good, but it was not. We then endured a 2 hour ride back to the hotel with the Taxi driver asking constantly if we wanted to go to a seafood restaurant. It was a total waste of an afternoon.
My thoughts on Bali, I really enjoyed it as I had very low expectations, it is not as commercialised as some reviews make out.
