Biking Buenos Aires Tigra Delta and Kayak Tour, Feb 2020.

A day out in the Tigre Delta.

The plan today was to do the Tigre Bike & Kayak tour with Biking Buenos Aires. This was a full day tour,  over 9 hours long involving 30 KM cycling and Kayaking in the Tigra Delta. Having joined a Biking Buenos Aires tour at the office yesterday we  had an air of confidence today as regards finding our way to the meeting point. The Taxi took us to the office for 0900- but the office was locked up. We waited and at about 09.30 one of the team arrived to open up. It was obvious he was not expecting us, this was because we were in the wrong location! I had missed the information – it was on the email- that the meeting point for this trip was in Palmaro, very near to the Fogon Asado Restaurant.  The good news was that we were the only ones on the tour, the guide was waiting for us and we go a Taxi to the correct meeting point.

The taxi took over 30 minutes to get to Palmaro where another wonderful guide, Marian was patiently waiting for us. As we were late she suggested we get the train for part of the journey and we cycled through Palmaro on designated cycle lanes and magnificent parkland to the modern train station. The train was very modern and brand new. After a couple of stations we got off in the town of San Isidro.

In San Isidro we visited a traditional mansion from the turn of the century, the Quinta Los Ombues. This building is now a museum, set in a garden overlooking the river, a magnificent setting.

We then visited the Cathedra of San Isidro.

We then cycled through very English looking suburbs to the Delta station on the Lujan River, the cycle was challenging as it was very hot. At the Delta station we traded the bikes for a Kayak and paddled down the Rio Sarmiento arriving at the Parque Recretivo El Alcazar for a BBQ lunch and much needed refreshments. The Kayaking was tough as we paddled against the current.

It was far easier going back.

To get back to Palmaro we cycled a few KM then got the train. On the train we heard that the first case of Covid 19 in the area had just been reported- in the town of San Isidro.

It had been an amazing day out and so different to the trip around Buenos Aires. I had read in guide books that you could get out to the Tigre Delta by train, but the instructions were sketchy. It would be very easy to do on your own, as the trains and stations on this line are really modern and easy to navigate. The cycling was tough, but we had a great day.

Tonight nothing was booked so we chose to eat at a restaurant almost next to our hotel; The Restaurant Roux.  Our choice could not have been any better as the meals we had were fabulous, Michelin star quality.

Buenos Aires was just getting better and better!
