Alaskan Adventure; Fabulous Fairbanks
The flight from Seattle to Fairbanks was perfect the timings allowing for a leisurely journey to the airport. The flight was with Delta, DL700 leaving Seattle at 11.30 and getting into Fairbanks at 14.18. The aircraft was a brand new Boeing – with Mood lighting- an attentive crew and very punctual.
It was a very short drive from Fairbanks Airport to the
Springhill Suites by Marriott.

Springhill Suites by Marriott were located in the center of
Fairbanks, the accommodation was a bit dated, but clean and the ‘Suites’
consisted of a Kitchen / Sitting area, large bed, bathroom and a walk in
wardrobe.
I did not know what to expect of Fairbanks; its history is
of gold mines, military bases and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. But as walked
around I found a neat, very clean town full of bright flowers - hiding its
wilderness side very well.
The weather was glorious, very hot, dry and perfect.
Also, we experienced the ‘Midnight Sun’, and whilst I understood that it did not get dark, I had not appreciated the concept of sunbathing and swimming in the River Chena at 22.00.

I was also impressed by the food in Fairbanks; some
of the best meals I have had in North America- who would have thought that in
the middle of the wilderness.

The main Touristy thing on offer in Fairbanks is The Riverboat Discovery, this was a cruise along the river Chene River. It called at a replica Athabascan Indian Village, stopped at a Dog Sleigh training camp and watched a Sea Plane take off and land on the river, all very touristy, but really good fun!
