The train journey from Denali to Anchorage took 7 ½ hours, so it was a long journey.
As there were no hire car facilities at the train station we had to get a taxi to the airport to pick up a hire car.
When looking at accommodation in Anchorage I had found hotels to be very expensive and looked very old fashioned. So I had booked accommodation through air BnB. I booked an one bed roomed apartment in Birch Road and it was a good choice. Especially when the 4 night stay cost less than one night in a hotel.
On our first day in Anchorage I had booked the Chinita Bay
Bear Viewing with Rusts Flying Service. I booked it for our first day as the
weather patterns can be unpredictable and felt that if we couldn’t go on day
one we would have other chances on the subsequent days. However, the weather
was perfect and the small aircraft took us to Chinita Bay in Lake Clarke
National Park where we landed on the beach.
The Bear Mountain Lodge then took
us to a meadow where we saw at least 15 Bears and Cubs frolicking, fighting and
generally amusing us. As the tide was in we did not see the bears digging for clams,
but this did not matter as it was a YOLO day.

The following day we drove out along the Turn Again Arm
calling in at the tourist haunts of the Coastal Wildlife Refuge, Seward Highway,
the drowned forest, the Portage Glacier. We went up the gondola to the top of Mount
Alyeska and enjoyed the amazing scenery and hot weather.

One of the highlights of Anchorage was the Tony Knowles
Coastal Trail. We hired bikes; the hire shop is located at the start of the trail and did this trail on two occasions. Although it
is in central Anchorage, and goes around the airport, we saw Moose and a Black
Bear and her two cubs- up close!

Anchorage, like the rest of Alaska was full of surprises and we were loving it!
