Goldcar Hire Car and Preveza Town

I am trying to remember how long it is since we had a European beach holiday, and I am struggling to recall the date of our last one.
We arrived at Manchester airport this moring to travel to mainland Greece. We have had holidays in the Greek Islands, but apart from Athens and a quick visit to Olympia a long time ago, this will be our first experience of mainland Greece.
We are traveling to Aktion National Airport (PVK), Preveza with Jet2.
The original flight had been due to leave at 14.00, but the schedule was changed and now departure was at 17.00, impacting upon arrival. The arrival time was 22.30.
The flight with with Jet2 was on time, and a good experience. The crew were proactive and hard working and the captain made regular updates on our progress. As there are no seat back monitors this was appreciated.
Deplaning and customs was quick and easy, despite there being four aircraft on the ground. Baggage collected, we hailed a taxi for the short journey the hotel I had pre booked. The Ionion Star Hotel. The Taxis are a fixed price and the prices are displayed on notice boards outside the terminal. It was 25 Euros to the hotel.
The hotel is not in the centre of Preveza, but was the only one I could find with Parking, AC and stating it had a 24 hour check in facility. A lot of the other hotels last check in was listed as 21.00.
The hotel is large, and the room’s enormous, and well stocked. The bed was comfortable, the room clean and the shower located in a large bath good - once I had climbed in!

The next day we went back to the airport and collected a hire car, from Goldcar.
Whilst collecting my rental car from Goldcar at Preveza Airport, I witnessed an incident that left me extremely disappointed with the company and its customer service.
Another customer was trying to collect a prepaid hire car that had been booked for the previous evening. His flight from Gatwick had been delayed, meaning he arrived in Preveza after the rental office had closed. He explained to the member of staff behind the desk that he had phoned the office to inform them of the delay.
Despite this, he was told that because he was considered a “no-show”, his reservation had been cancelled. The Goldcar employee simply repeated this response several times, seemingly without taking the customer's explanation into consideration.
In fact, when the customer again explained that he had contacted the office to advise them of the delay, the employee appeared to sneer at the explanation and responded that the office closed at 22:00, so nobody would have been there.
What made the situation even more frustrating was that there appeared to be numerous cars on the forecourt. Despite having already prepaid for his rental, the customer was told that the only vehicle available to him was a much larger and considerably more expensive car.
I found the attitude and manner of the Goldcar staff extremely rude and unhelpful. Watching this interaction has certainly influenced my decision: I will not be renting from Goldcar again.
☝My advice to anyone considering using them is to read the terms and conditions of your rental agreement very carefully, particularly regarding late arrivals, “no-shows” and what happens if your flight is delayed. Based on what I witnessed, I certainly wouldn't want to find myself in the same situation.
As it was a Sunday most of the shops were closed and the roads very quiet, we enjoyed a late breakfast at one of the many cafes just one street back from the marina.
In the evening we joined the local crowds and found a restaurant near to the Venetian Clock Tower to enjoy grilled Sardines and Calamari from the lagoon.
