A Day in Neiafu, Vava'u Group, Tonga 🌴

Today, waking up to a spectacular landscape as we  sailed through the Vava'u group of islands in Tonga, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and lush landscapes.

The journey to Neiafu, the capital of the group, was absolutely breath-taking. As we sailed closer to the town, we passed many beautiful islands, their rugged coastlines and sheltered harbours painting a picture-perfect scene.

At 9:00 AM, we boarded the Zodiacs, ready for a day of exploration.

Greeted by a group of traditional dancers at the dock, adding a vibrant touch to the welcoming atmosphere. After a warm introduction, we hopped onto a mini-bus, where our local guide – a lovely lady with an infectious smile – took us on a cultural tour of the island.

Our first stop was St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a beautiful and serene space that gave us a glimpse into the local spiritual life. ⛪

From there, we ventured inland, beyond the airstrip and down winding, narrow roads. Along the way, we made stops at three incredible lookout points, each offering sweeping views of the coastline and the pristine beaches below. It was a sight to behold – although, with limited access, we could only take in the beauty from afar.

We continued our tour back to the main town of Neiafu, where we were welcomed into a community hall for a traditional Kava ceremony

The locals also treated us to a spread of fresh tropical fruits 🍍🍌, and we learned about the fascinating process of creating Tongan tapa cloth – made from the bark of trees and intricately painted by hand. The community’s warm hospitality left a lasting impression on me, and I was grateful for the chance to learn more about their customs and traditions.

Before heading back to the ship, we made a quick stop at the local market. It was a lively scene, filled with colourful stalls selling everything from handmade crafts to fresh produce.

By the time we returned to the ship, it was time for lunch, and we sailed to a new location near Swallows Cave. The waters here were calm, and the surroundings were even more stunning. We hopped back on the Zodiacs to explore the small limestone islands that dot the area, home to flying foxes, sea birds, and plenty of turtles. 🦇🦜🐢
Then into Swallows Cave – where local tours take snorkelers to swim in the crystal-clear water. Swimming in such a pristine environment must be a surreal experience.

After our cave exploration, the crew surprised us with something unexpected: a floating bar set up on a Zodiac! It was the perfect touch, and we all gathered for some fun, laughter, and tropical drinks in the middle of the water. Talk about a unique experience! 🍹

Back on board, the fun didn’t stop. A cocktail hour was held before the highlight of the evening: a pool party with a chocolate theme
And to add to a day already been filled with enough delights, we were treated to chocolate fondue, chocolate martinis, and plenty of sweet treats to nibble on while dancing the night away.

All in all, today was nothing short of magical – full of new discoveries and plenty of laughter. Tomorrow is a sea day, so no need to get up, so we partied on.
