Kyoto to Nagasaki. Unzen Onsen, Rugby World Cup 2019, Japan

12th and 13th October 2019
Our last trip on the Kyoto Municipal Subway to the main JR Kyoto station was as easy as it had been every day we used it.
From Kyoto we got the Limited Express Haruka, this was an odd looking train and the journey took about 75 minutes. Upon arrival at Osaka Airport we pulled up next to a train decorated with ‘Hello Kitty’ livery.

It was easy to find the Jetstar check in, but I had obviously misunderstood the web site. I thought I had paid for extra bags, but it seemed I had ‘upgraded’. We had priority check in, allocated seats, a drink and a snack.

The crew were lovely and spoke perfect English. The journey was seamless and by 12.00 we were in Fukuoka picking up the hire car.

We decided to head to Nagasaki, the road took us through many hills and the scenery was particularly beautiful as we rounded Omura Bay.
The road took us into Nagasaki we drove down towards the sea, only to see Celebrity Millennium dominating the port. It had an unscheduled stop here due to the Typhoon. Opposite the ship was the Crown Plaza, and it had a lot of parking space, so that’s where we checked into for the next two nights.
Although it was late afternoon, the air was still warm and the climate barmy. We walked into the main town and found the most wonderful Yakitori restaurant. We sat around the central cooking area drinking beer, as the chef grilled the selection of food on sticks to perfection.

The following day we had a day out driving out to the Shimabara Peninsular, and up to the town of Unzen. This town was quite dilapidated and looked like it had been a popular tourist spa town in it heyday, but that was now passed. Some of the Onsens and foot baths were now dry and just had volcanic stem pumping from them.

We did find a small day spa where we rented a private Onsen for a few hours- not that we could stay in the water for long as it was so hot.

The seaside town of Obama was fun with volcanic foot-baths facing the sea.

The next morning we explored Nagasaki. It was a revelation, easy to get around thanks to its tram system, very European with a lot of history, not just about the Atom Bomb.
We loved it, it was an unexpected surprise, and was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan.
